Tax Hikes Are Never ‘Reasonable’

Declining property values across the country mean that local governments are getting less revenue. For us, the result was a refund from our escrow account a few weeks ago and the great news that our mortgage payment will be lower for the next year.

But rather than try to make lemonade (lower taxes) out of lemons (a troubled housing market and a slowing economy), officials in New Canaan, Conn., are focused on “keeping taxes reasonable.” That’s code for “tax hike.”
