Taxed Until Proven Innocent

Even politicians who love to gouge the taxpayers often are reluctant to raise obvious taxes like those on sales, so sometimes they get creative like the Cook County Board in Illinois.

Hence the proposal to tax people for being arrested. In Cook County, you’re still innocent until proven guilty, but apparently officials have no qualms about taxing you until you prove your innocence.

The county budget apparently is so gloomy that officials want to tax folks from the womb to the grave. A proposal to raise the fees for birth, death and marriage certificates, at a cost to taxpayers of $1 million each year, also is on the table.
