Reader “mdb002″ suggested that I post a grand total of taxes paid year to date as part of the weekly tax bite. It’s a great idea. I’ve updated the relevant posts.
The latest total — $7,218.18 — is listed in the tax bite for Week 7.
The year-to-date totals going forward will include the bigger updates from the monthly tax bite when relevant because the monthly entries include figures that aren’t listed in the weekly totals, such as income taxes and communications fees. I get that information only every other week or monthly.
I’ll also include year-to-date totals in the entries for monthly tax bites.

WOW. Consider that it’s just February 22, that is an astounding amount of tax.
You’re doing a great deal of good here, bringing attention to this situation so others will start to think themselves about all the hidden taxes they are paying, so keep up the good work!

In fairness to the tax bureaucrats, this year has been a bit abnormal for our family so far.
I was hit with a big tax bill on a generous severance check when laid off in January. And while I was blessed with a new job right away, we needed it because we’ve already had to replace both our refrigerator and dryer. That boosted our sales taxes significantly to start the year.
But even after the taxes from those “extras” are removed, we’ve paid a few thousand dollars to the government so far — more than enough to justify the irritation that made me start this blog in the first place.
